In
2001, Por un mejor HOY began
to carry out workshops on a volunteer basis with youth in
communities
in need throughout the Americas.
Since 2004, HOY has
organized and conducted participatory trips to Mexico, offering
this rewarding experience to many travelers who have given
thousands
of hours of volunteer time to a range of activities: from playing
and talking with street kids to
building adobe bricks at an eco-garden,
from interacting with elderly people to helping in skills development
workshops with mentally challenged youth, from building a playground
to painting murals on schoolhouses.
HOY has developed a social
network among individuals, projects and organizations in New York,
Mexico and other countries. HOY was incorporated
as a New York State
nonprofit with tax-exempt status on April 30, 2004.
HOY relocated to Mexico in early 2006, where it has extended its links with institutions
and community projects that constantly need volunteers in the Mexico City and Cuernavaca areas. HOY has
sent volunteer groups to work in small rural communities outside
the town of Tianguistengo, Hidalgo, carrying out projects defined
by the community to meet local needs. The latter has become the
setting for HOY’s alternative spring break
program with Loyola Marymount University.
What are Por un mejor HOY's
plans for the future?
Aside from continuing to foster and
expand participatory travel, Por un mejor HOY is in the process of establishing its permanent headquarters in Mexico. For the time being, Casa HOY in Cuernavaca, Morelos, is HOY’s home base, serving as the coordination center between
international volunteers and local community projects. It also
functions as a hostel for budget travelers. Casa HOY offers an alternative stay in Mexico, an experience
with a social meaning in which both travelers and locals get to know,
help and learn from one another.
